1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East
Gladys Wrenick has been an elected Vice President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East since 2007. 1199SEIU is the largest and fastest growing union in the nation with over 400,000 members throughout the east coast, 8,000 under Gladys’ jurisdiction at Montefiore Medical Center.
Gladys is a graduate of both the College of New Rochelle School of New Resources, with a Bachelor’s Degree, and of Mercy College, with a Master’s Degree of Distinction in Organizational Leadership. She is a fervent advocate of education and has assisted and facilitated many educational programs leading to higher wages, namely Surgical Technologist Program, Culinary Chef training, Customer Service training and Career advance training for clerical to secretary, nursing attendant to LPN, and building service workers to waxer/strippers, all resulting in higher wages. Gladys was also the co-chair of the Montefiore Service Program.
Gladys asserts that for unions to be effective, they need to work in coalition with other social justice organizations and build a strong voice in government. She has protested against stop and frisk, supported immigration and healthcare reform and helped to elect scores of progressive leaders.
Gladys is a trustee of the 1199SEIU National Benefit Fund, the 1199SEIU Child Care Fund which covers 50,000 children of members, and the 1199 pension Fund. She is a proud mother of one son and two grandchildren.
