Accessing Transportation for Medicaid Recipients

Description

Non-Emergency Transportation Services for Medicaid Recipients

Transportation is a covered benefit that enables Medicaid recipients to go to essential medical appointments, including primary and behavioral healthcare, dialysis, and pre-natal care.

In New York City, the state Department of Health has contracted with MAS (Medical Answering Services) to authorize non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) via taxi and livery services, ambulette, non-emergency ambulance, and more.

Through discussions with our partners, we have learned that taxi/livery services through this benefit are underutilized. These are critical transportation options that allow many of our patients to access much-needed outpatient care.

This training covers how the state’s NEMT system works, including the range of services it offers, eligibility, and step-by-step guidelines and tools for using the system to arrange for transportation for your patients.
